An Nd:YAG laser is a solid state laser capable of producing a near-infrared wavelength that penetrates deep to the skin and is readily absorbed by hemoglobin and melanin chromophores. The lasing medium of Nd:YAG (Neodymium-doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet) is a man-made crystal (solid state) that is pumped by a high intensity lamp and placed into a resonator (a cavity capable of amplifying the power of the laser). By creating a variable long pulse duration and an appropriate spot size, it is possible to significantly heat deep skin tissues, such as large blood vessels and vascular lesions.
How Does A Long Pulsed Nd:YAG Laser Work?
Nd:YAG laser energy is selectively absorbed by the deeper levels of the dermis and allows for treatment of deeper vascular lesions such as telangiectasias, hemangiomas and leg veins. The laser energy is delivered using long pulses which are converted into heat in the tissue. The heat impacts the vasculature of the lesions. In addition, the Nd:YAG Laser can treat at a more superficial level; by heating the subcutaneous skin (in a non-ablative manner) it stimulates neocollagenesis which improves the appearance of facial wrinkles.
Treat leg veins with long-pulsed 1064-nm light. The Nd:YAG 1064 laser handpiece coagulates and destroys large, deep, yet cosmetically unacceptable blood vessels and leg veins without the use of chemicals or needles. This easy-to-use, ergonomic handpiece effectively coagulates oxygenated reddish telangiectasias, as well as deoxygenated bluish venule ectasia and reticular veins up to 4 mm diameter.
The long-pulsed 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser is able to penetrate deeper into the skin than lasers that use shorter wavelengths of light. This enables treatment of deeper vascular lesions such as reticular veins, deeper spider veins, hemangiomas and leg veins than can be targeted with other lasers.

FACIAL VEINS
The long-pulsed Nd:YAG can be used to treat larger spider veins around the nose and other facial areas,
as well as blue reticular veins around the eyes.
VENOUS LAKE
Vascular lesions of the lip are common, especially as we get older. Although these are primarily of cosmetic concern,
they can occasionally bleed or get irritated.
The long-pulse Nd:YAG tends to be much more effective than shorter wavelength lasers.
LEG VEINS
The long-pulse Nd:YAG can be used to treat some spider veins and reticular veins of the legs. However,
sclerotherapy is still the gold standard for treatment of these leg veins.
PORT WINE STAINS
Port wine stains are usually first treated with short-pulse-width vascular lasers, including the 532 nm KTP and
the 585/595 nm pulsed dye lasers. The long-pulsed Nd:YAG can be used to treat areas that are resistant.
In addition, areas of the port wine stain can become raised and nodular over time.
The LP Nd:YAG can be very useful in treating these lesions.
